Time for a checkup: Best practices for a healthy enterprise mobility program

2016 should be a big year for investments in enterprise mobility programs. According to a recent study by Harris Poll, enterprise mobility leads all areas of IT investments by IT decision makers in 2016.

As leaders for enterprise mobility programs look ahead to 2016, there are several important components they need to explore. For instance, how efficient are the apps already deployed? If your organisation has only recently launched an enterprise mobility program, how can you make sure it takes off?

Whether you’re an early adopter of enterprise mobility or it’s a top priority for 2016, you already understand the benefits of unlocking mobile technology for your workforce. The key indicators–the number of active users, logins, ongoing downloads, and new additions–are what provide the full picture of whether your enterprise mobility is healthy.

Monitoring these metrics will ensure that the apps you put the resources into developing are actually being utilised and hitting their mark in the field. Here are some recommendations on how to use app analytics to grow your mobility program.

Track app users

Tracking actual app users can help administrators better understand user habits and what factors help or hinder adoption. Understanding how many users have downloaded an app, the roles of users who are adopting apps, where they are located, and whether they encountered any snags in the download process can help administrators to identify and act on any download issues that need to be resolved.

Know your "true adoption" number

Your “true adoption” number is how often is app has been opened/launched vs. downloaded. While download rates may suggest the popularity of an app, our research finds that just over half of organisations are able to track which enterprise apps are actually being used. Moreover, a smaller percentage of administrators can see which apps are being used by specific users while just 42% of respondents can see how frequently apps are being used.

App analytics can help administrators to identify how frequently individual users are using apps and whether there are any snags they’re encountering as they move through an app’s functionality that may be hindering an app’s full use potential.

Harness the power of an enterprise app store

A mobile application management (MAM®) platform can make it easier for users to discover and download the mobile apps they need. An enterprise app store can provide other benefits, including providing administrators with the ability to continuously collect regular ratings and other metrics on apps being downloaded and used. Such metrics can serve as quick temperature checks on the health of the app ecosystem.

Ensure your IT department is watching consumer trends

Consumer trends can foretell the next wave of development and innovation. How consumers are accessing news and information on their mobile devices and the self-service capabilities that are being created for them can be evaluated and applied by enterprise developers. Understanding the features and functionality that consumers are gravitating towards with recent consumer apps that have been released can be used to guide administrators as to the elements that end users will find attractive in enterprise apps.

For instance, the benefits of a personal organiser app such as Clear that makes it easy for consumers to streamline their daily to-do lists could potentially be applied to productivity tools used by enterprise users.

Maintain a clear security policy

Is your security policy supporting or stifling adoption? For employees to understand and abide by the organisation’s BYOD and mobile app security policies, policies should be clearly communicated and contextual for employees. For instance, if IT and security policies are vague and aren’t clearly communicated, some employees may be reluctant to download and use apps for fear of retribution or concerns that they may be overly restricted in using apps outside the four walls of the company.

A healthy app program delivers the tools that actually help employees get work done how, when, and where they do their work. Job shadowing employees and work teams can enable developers and administrators to gain a deeper understanding of the day-to-day tasks that sales, marketing, finance, and other roles do to complete work processes.

Grasp the end user experience

The user experience begins with the app discovery and download process. How simple is it for employees to find and access role-based apps? Once these requirements have been addressed, developers can determine whether there are functional roadblocks that are making it difficult for end users to use apps as they intend to. When end users believe apps are logically designed to meet their workflow requirements, they can become strong advocates in promoting app adoption to their peers.

Ask the right questions

Make sure developers are asking the right questions for the long-term health and success of an app and the enterprise app program. Remember, enterprise apps aren’t a one-and-done situation. Business conditions and user requirements are constantly evolving. Stay close to end users to determine additional functionality they need to help them do their jobs more effectively. For instance, field salespeople may request the ability to collect a customer’s electronic signature to close deals at a client site and accelerate the sales cycle.


A healthy enterprise mobility program reflects that all of the vital signs being measured are in good shape. Monitoring the full lifecycle of an enterprise app and staying close to the needs of the end users are the keys to success.
